Counselor: Steven M. Goldberg Candor, N.Y. Steve’s
Story: “Every day, I come into my school and make a difference in a child’s life,” says Steven Goldberg, a school counselor in Candor, N.Y. Besides being a counselor, Steve Goldberg is a husband, father, writer, kayaker, dancer and an “avid advocate for all children.” He also serves as a volunteer firefighter and was recently named Firefighter of the Year by his local company.  As a member of the New York State School Counselors Association (NYSSCA), Goldberg was sent to New York City after the Sept. 11 attacks to counsel students and help them recover from tragedy. Goldberg says that he is “determined to make a positive impact for the students and for the counseling profession.”
Former NYSSCA President Tom Wiggins says, “Steve possesses great enthusiasm and excellent ideas. He is very self-motivated, and he cares about kids’ success.”  Goldberg’s own success has been shaped by an illness that challenged his life. He underwent major surgery in 1996. Throughout his illness, he remained in graduate school and persevered with “unconditional support” from those around him. Now, Goldberg volunteers for the United Ostomy Association, where he helps children using his personal health experience and his love of counseling. Do you know an outstanding counselor who deserves recognition?
