"Real Black People"

I attend a small school in Texas where labels, some true and some false, are placed on me everyday.

When I was in the 7th grade a group of girls taunted me day after day simply because I refuse to hang out with what they considered to be, "real black people".

Well I am African-American, and very proud of it, but these girls were trash. They gave other black girls like me a bad outlook.

One day I decided I would sit with them at lunch and see what it was all about, the whole "real black people" thing.

When I sat down the table immdiately got quiet at first I thought,"Oh gosh girl get up and run away as fast as you can and never turn back," but something said "stay you have to be calm and look cool."

My motto now and then, is an was, "Never let em' see you sweat". I sat and I asked like I'd always been friends with them,"So what yall doin this weekend?".

One of them replied "nothing you and your white girls would be up to." To that comment I had nothing to say back for a moment, then it came to me",Yea, your probably right we don't like trash like you."

Well that's what I wouldv'e liked to say, but it came out,"How do you know if you don't know us?". A girl name Kim glared at me and said,"Cus we know ya type, don't wanna be black so you act white and stick with your white clique."

I felt like I was under attack, like a baby bird whose own sibling had pushed them out of the nest too soon and unexpectedly. I turned to walk away and I said,"By the way I'm Jordan, don't forget my name cause I'll call you this summer."

With those cheery words I went back to my friends who had always been there for me and weren't going anywhere, I sat smiled and thought "oh well, here is where I belong."

That summer I did come in contact with almost all of those girls, at first they were rude, but by the time school started that fall I had made a new group of friends. I learned a lot about those girls, and now they're my friends too.

I still wonder sometimes why they acted the way they did, but when I see them doing it now I tell them to stop and invite the person to sit with us.

Whether they say "yes" or "no" is on them, but at least we'd done our part and offered.
