Choosing a college in your hometown

Name: Katie Fischette
Age: 20
What she did: Chose a college in her home city.
Katie’s story: The hottest gossip is always who’s going where after graduation. The response to my college of choice was never enthusiastic. I chose to attend a small, local, private college about 20 minutes from home. Most of my friends were planning on going to large universities a few hours away. Staying close to home seemed boring to them—but not to me. Although I go to a college that I could easily commute to, I live on campus. I have the convenience of being able to go home at any time. I save money by not having to do laundry on campus, and I get a home-cooked meal at least once a week. It’s nice to get away from home and be on my own, but it’s also comforting to be able to go home if I need or want to. Although there have been times when I’ve thought that I should have gone to school further away, I made the right decision. I’m able to continue to do the multiple activities I love. Now that I am entering my junior year in college, a lot of my friends are transferring or have transferred to schools closer to home. I think students are often pressured by their peers, counselors and their families to go “away” to school. But going far away is not always the best idea. In my case, staying close to home was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was given the opportunity to live on campus at a beautiful school, meet tons of new people and still have the luxury of being close to home. If you are considering going to a university that is close by, don’t be discouraged. Do what you feel is best for you, not what’s best for those around you.
