Grade report

It doesn’t matter how many times someone tells me to start something early, or how many time management speeches I’m forced to listen to; I always wait until the last minute to start my homework.

The first couple weeks of college went fine as far as my workload was concerned. But as the weeks passed, distractions began to pop up everywhere. Instant Messenger, solitaire on my computer and talking to my roommates became my main concerns. Self-discipline: definitely something I lack.

One Sunday night, after it had been raining all day, I finally sat down at my desk at 11 p.m. to start my homework. Suddenly, a friend came running into my room completely soaked and covered in mud. Apparently the quad was flooded, and just about every student on campus was outside in the foot of water. After deliberating for all of 30 seconds, I put my pen down and ran out in the rain. Maybe that wasn’t the best choice, considering I had several hours of homework before me, but how could I resist? I spent an hour splashing around and throwing each other in the mud.

At first I didn’t really worry too much about the several chapters in economics that I had failed to read, or the Spanish exercises that I had neglected to complete. After all, college isn’t like high school. If you don’t do your homework, your professors don’t really care. But you better be able to prove yourself on exam day.

It came as a reality check as I received a paper back that had a less-than-satisfactory grade written in harsh red ink across the top. I had written it in haste the night before. It was then I recognized that it was time to get my act together and get my work done.

As much as you’re going to want to have fun in college, studying really does take priority. Don’t take my word for it, though. If you’re anything like me, you’re just going to have to learn for yourself.

Caitlin McMullin is a freshman at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn.
