The apartment life
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from living in an apartment with three other people, it’s that you should handpick your roomies. Granted, there are situations (like mine) in which you have little or no choice. Still, you should do your darndest to know what you’re getting yourself into. Here are a few tips for living with others.
Tip: Choose wisely
Living with a person is different than hanging out with a person. Think about your living habits, and share them with your roommates so no one’s surprised.
Tip: Delegate early
Living in an apartment is a far more intense experience than living in a dormitory. When you’re in a dorm, you don’t have to vacuum 900 sq. ft. of living space. You don’t have to cook or buy groceries. And you most certainly don’t have to scrub last night’s dinner off the plates. But these are all chores that you need to do in an apartment. As early as possible, delegate who is to do what when. Rotate responsibilities so nobody feels relegated to the worst job.
Tip: Communicate
Just like any relationship, communication is the key to success. Make sure any complaints are brought forward as they arise, not after tempers flare. Air your concerns during a roommate meeting during which you all sit down and discuss the situation.
Tip: Pay the bills on time
I can’t stress enough the importance of paying your bills on time. Make sure you know who will collect the money and who will write the big check for the utility company. Give the collector your check early so that they don’t have to ask for money. It’s not comfortable for any party when bills aren’t being paid.
