Reflections on great high school memories

If there’s one thing that I have learned in my four years at Avon Park High, it’s that time flies by when you’re enjoying yourself. I can honestly say that it really seemed like just yesterday that I was a timid freshman stepping into an unfamiliar setting of crowded hallways, rowdy pep rallies and tough academic competition. Now that graduation is only a step away, the thought of leaving high school life behind seems so unrealistic. It’s difficult to wave goodbye to teachers who devote their lives to helping students get good educations. It’s also hard to leave behind friendships that I thought would last a lifetime! However, as I linger on the wonderful memories of high school life, I begin to anticipate an even more fun-filled experience awaiting me at college. Of course, college will mark a new beginning in my life. Once again, I’ll be a scared freshman fearing the unknown aspects of college life! Getting situated into the new atmosphere will mean making new friends and adjusting to a different type of curriculum all over again. Although I’m somewhat dreading this new life ahead of me, I have to think objectively. I’m beginning to see all the positives. College will allow me to begin my young adult life with a clean slate, and I will be able to use my past experiences in high school as guidelines to help me through the transition. Soon I will embark on my own personal journey to explore sights and sounds to which I’ve never been exposed. Graduating from high school is not an end to my youthful days but rather the beginning of a new chapter in my life. When my name gets called at graduation, I’ll walk proudly across the stage to receive my diploma. For the last time, I’ll glance upon the faces of my classmates of 2003, and I won’t be sad. I will smile with delight because I’ll know that together we created lasting high school memories that will remain with us as we discover the great experiences that the future holds for all of us! Tanya Walwyn is a (graduating!) senior at Avon Park High School in Avon Park, Fla. She is an intern for The Next Step Magazine.
