An unusual transfer

Transferring from one college to another can be an intimidating process, but most of all it’s an exciting time.

When I transferred to SUNY Brockport in the spring semester of 1999, I was an unusual student. I was changing from a history major to a physical education major. I wasn’t really sure where to go and what to do to complete the transfer process, though everyone at Brockport was very helpful. The most helpful part was the SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration) session. This was when I met with my advisor for the first time. She told me what classes would allow me to finish my degree in the quickest amount of time.

After I met with my advisor, I was ready to register for my classes. This was one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking moments. Was I going to get into the classes I needed? Was I going to have to reorganize my schedule to make classes fit? Was I going to have to get up early to get to school for an 8 o’clock class and not leave until 9 o’clock at night? All these questions were flying through my head. Thankfully, with the help of my advisor, I got all the classes I needed.

Transferring was one of the best moves I made in my college career. The courses are academically challenging, campus life is full of opportunities to meet new friends, and I feel like I have the direction I needed to succeed in my studies and future career.

Although I was a little hesitant to go to Brockport because of its so-called reputation of being a jock school, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was far from the truth (even though I was coming in to be a phys ed major). I learned that the average transferring GPA was a 3.0.

Although transferring might be an anxious time, it is one that can only benefit you if you realize that your goals will be better met at a different school. Don’t just deal with a college if it isn’t what you need or want. Find one that is, and transfer there. It’s your future.

Kris Thoman is a senior at SUNY Brockport who plans to transfer to New York Chiropractic College.
