ANIMAL-HELPER AWARD

What: Do you help the furred, feathered or finned? The National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), youth education affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States, wants to hear about you.
NAHEE is accepting applications for the 2004 Humane Teen of the Year Award. The second annual award will recognize a teenager who has made a significant contribution to animal protection, such as direct work on behalf of animals, aiding in the passage of humane legislation or educating others to be kind to animals.

Who: Any student 13 to 18 years old

Where: Applications available at www.HumaneTeen.org.

Deadline: Oct. 31, 2004

Prize: The winner will receive $300 and a feature story on www.HumaneTeen.org.

Past winner: Last year’s award recognized a 15-year-old whose work for animals included rehabilitating cats with special needs, using her equestrian skills to help disabled children and helping to find homes for hundreds of homeless animals.

DOING SOMETHING?

What: Young people rock! That’s why the Do Something BRICK Award honors and funds young community leaders who have identified problems in their local communities and done something about them.

Who: There are two categories, one for community leaders under age 18 and one for people ages 19 to 25

Where: Applications available at www.dosomething.org.

Prize: Six leaders age 18 and under will each receive a $5,000 higher education scholarship and a $5,000 grant for continued community work. Three winners age 19 to 25 will each receive a $10,000 grant. All winners receive engraved bricks, pro bono services, support and recognition in addition to the opportunity to shmooze with celebs and spread the word about their projects at the annual star-studded BRICK Awards Gala in New York City.

Deadline: Nov. 1, 2004.

Past winners: One previous winner helped found an organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth; another worked as a policy specialist for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless; another implemented 15 local initiatives to ensure that every child in her community grows up healthy.
