Other tasks of the job include: receiving patients, scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, and handling incoming and outgoing mail.

The typical medical transcriptionist's works a 40 hour week however those that are self-employed are more likely to work irregular hours. Most employees work in rather comfortable settings such as hospitals, physicians' offices, laboratories, etc. The draw back of working in confinement is that the job usually entails sitting in the same position for extended periods of time which can cause problems that affect the back, neck and eyes. The constant repetitive process can also cause stress.
