The world of broadcasting has changed dramatically in recent years. Broadcasting and communications used to address just a handful of radio and television networks and local stations but has now expanded to include cable, satellite broadcasting, internet communications and more, and may also include the world of advertising and public relations as well. The field of broadcasting and communications offers far more opportunities today than in previous years, and the game has changed quite a bit.
It is about people, and about communication. Messages have traveled through human communities since the beginning of time, but today those messages are often generated at a massive scale. Broadcasting and Communications degrees focus on how individuals use messages to generate a response through various contexts and methods, including culture, channels, and media. Today, new technologies offered by the Internet are changing the face of mass communication in a major way.
Most Broadcasting and Communications degree programs begin with the foundational theories in communications, public relations, journalism, and also study "communication persuasion." Students also study both traditional broadcasting and electronic broadcasting. Depending on the degree path and an individual student's focus, courses will go on to reflect that preference, whether it is working as a news anchor, a producer, or in one of the many other choices available in the field. Most Broadcasting and Communications schools offer both a two-year associates degree program and a four-year bachelors degree program as well.
Graduates work in any number of fields. Because it is such a diverse area, you'll find Broadcasting and Communications school graduates working in advertising, business, corporate communication, public relations, journalism, and in electronic media. You'll find that a broadcasting and communications degree will help you work in any area of broadcasting, including programming, news, administration, engineering, or sales. This field is experiencing rapid growth, so if you want to "take a message to the people," a career in broadcasting and communications might be right for you!
