Communication is Key

If you were to ask a High-School student and their parents the same question, the answers would be so different that it would be hard to believe that they live together.

I'm D.J. Brenson, a freshman at Ft. Myers High, and hopefully by reading this you will better understand the differences of opinions in adults and their kids. Having a good relationship with your parents is very important when you are a freshman, being that they are your taxi at most times, and practically control what you can and can't do.

Fortunately for me, I have two parents that care for me and support me in everything I do, but sometimes when they are so involved bad things happen. Take me for instance, last summer I started to run cross-country for the school team. I had a fairly good year, and I had a varsity jacket by the end of the year, but for me, regardless of what kind of "talent" I have, I really don't consider getting up at 5:30 five days a week during my summer vacation a good time.

Expectations have been made, and I feel now that I am stuck in something that I really don't want to do. I now have a choice to make, should I tell my parents how I feel, and ruin their expectations of me, or could I just press on running to keep them happy. This example of mine is a reoccurring situation that teens are put into on a day-to-day basis.

What High-School comes down to for me is weather you are going to do things for yourself, or if your just out to impress others. Communication is the key, when your parents know how you feel, they can help you through the situation. It is hard to talk to your parents about certain issues, but hopefully by confronting them, and bringing them your concerns, you will be able to sort things out.
