Don't Judge Unless You Want to Be Judged

One of the problems  I have is that I judge people from their outer appearance before getting to know them. For example, in the 7th grade, their was a new girl who came from Syria. She wore the weirdest clothes, had the weirdest hair, and had a thick accent! I thought she was an alien until I started to talk to her and hang out with her. Pretty soon, she taught me how to write my name in Arabic. Pretty cool huh!

A couple summers ago, I realized that I can stick out like a sore thumb.During one summer vacation, my family and I decided to go to Ghana, Africa, where my parents were born and raised. They thought it would be a good idea for me to visit my relatives, though I really wasn't able to communicate with them.

When I got to Ghana International Airport, I recieved so many stares from Ghanians. Here I was, an African-American girl with American clothes, high-heeled shoes, hoop earrings, and brand-named sunglasses.Although I looked like a Hollywood movie star (probably not!), the Africans probably thought that I came another galaxy.

When we approached the village all the African girls pointed and stared at me. I never felt so inferior in my whole entire life! Since many African girls cut their hair short, they thought that I was weird for growing my hair out. Although I felt inferior, I didn't feel it for long. Many African girls came and started to talk to me. Although I didn't speak their language, I was able to communicate with them and tell them about the United States. I never knew I could be so entertaining!

My experience in Ghana has taught me never to judge people unless you want to be judged. Everyone is different and you have to accept that fact.Because of my trip, I am confident that when I go to college, I will be able to talk with and understand people of different ethnic backgrounds.I LOVE DIVERSITY!!!
