Driven

So this is what it feels like to drive. My life in my hands, controlled by instinct. My stomach churning, the engine rumbling and I’m afraid. Fear of destroying something expensive, fear of death. And I’m only going 12 miles per hour. My hands gripping the beige leather wheel.

The Explorer, so powerful, and under my control. I drive circles around the parking lot, and park, reverse, and turn figure-eights, around poles, throughout the whole parking lot, getting used to it. So this is what it feels like to understand what responsibility is.

Driving is tougher than I thought, more difficult than it looks. I will practice for the rest of my life, living on an instinct, keeping control of the wheel, which is control of my life. So this is what it feels like.
