Driving

Ever since I turned fifteen, I have constantly bugged my parents with the question: when will I be able to sit behind the wheel and drive? Well, the day finally arrived. After all my nagging, my dad said yes.

It was October 6th, and my dad picked me up from one of my friends' houses, and said, "Get ready, we are going to the parking lot of North High School." I didn't know what that meant. Then it finally came to me and I realized, he's letting me drive today.

My dad opened up his car door, and I opened up mine, and I got into the driver's seat. I sat down, and said to myself, this is what a driver’s seat feels like, with a wheel in front, and a pedal for braking and a pedal for moving. The first thing was to turn the car on. Turning that key was scary. I said to myself, In which direction do I need to turn it in, how hard do I need to turn it?

In the beginning, I was nervous stepping on the gas. I didn't know how fast I was going to go. I finally did it, and it was one of the most amazing moments in my life. Dad said "You must put your foot on the brake to switch gears into drive", so I did, and there I went. I was driving.

I drove up and down the aisles, and I parked. The parking part wasn't my best, but I knew if I practiced, I would be the best driver I could be.

As I was driving that day, I felt like I wasn't a kid anymore. Things I did from the past, were all flashing before my eyes. I was remembering back to the times when I would sit on my dad's lap while he had his foot on the pedal and I would be the happiest person, just to help turn that wheel. Now it was my turn to sit alone, my turn to be in control.

Even though I haven't driven on a real road yet, I knew something big has to have happened. That day, I was finally in the driver’s seat, and I knew if I was practicing now, the day to really drive down my street and away was soon to come.
